Skype 2.1 Beta

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Skype actually made some kind of release for linux. I was shocked. I thought skype had left us GNU/Linux users in the dust thinking that we had been passified by what was there. I stand corrected however.

So far in my playing around with this new release it feels more stable that the 2.0 did. And they added support for PulseAudio so I don’t have to muck around with my sound settings each time I want to make a call.

Reflextions on iMovie

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

This is a rant about iLife in general. elg I am curious if your experience is different. I needed to make a slideshow and thought that I would try and use iMovie. Apart from it being a little feature thin I guess it was all right. The KenBurns stuff is random and so it was zooming in on the feet of the subjects instead of their head with no obvious way to change it. But I guess it comes down to a general rant about iLife.

I want to be able to use files on my computer. I don’t want to use a third application to import those files before I can use them. So, with iMovie, I can only use pictures that I have imported into iPhoto or Apeture. I can only use songs that I have imported into iTunes. Never mind that the photos are on a cd and I could just have the movie use them from there. I have to import them into iPhoto.

Simple desktop computer use, to me, is to have the least amounts of steps needed to get the results desired.

Picture Slideshow in linux

Monday, November 24th, 2008

So, for work I make picture slideshow videos for people (among many other things). And I told my cousin I would make one for his wedding. I thought that I would try and do everything in linux instead of windows (which is what I have at work). I couldn’t find anything that would allow me to make a video easily.

I can make a video with 50 pictures in two and a half hours. That is scan to handing out the finished product labeled and in a case. At work I use Pinnacle Studio 10 to make the actual video, Adobe Photoshop to import photos, Adobe Encore DVD to make the menu and burn. In linux I can use the GIMP to import the photos (though-be-it slower), and devede to make the menu and burn. But what I couldn’t find anything to make a simple slideshow video and output it to DVD compatible MPEG2.

I tried digikam, which wouldn’t even start. dvd-slideshow seems conveluted and I didn’t have time to play with it, in addition, I just want a movie m2v file or avi, not for it to actually burn the dvd. slcreator hasn’t been maintained in two years and I couldn’t get it to run at all. jDVDSlideshow wanted me to make the config file for dvd-slideshow and them import it into there, which seems backwards from how a gui should work. And OpenMovieEditor seemed like it could have worked had I put in the time, But it doesn’t have the transitions of KenBurns-like effects that I like.

So, question for the lazy web: Does anyone know a simple yet feature rich Slideshow Movie creation program for linux?
